Slowridin' through Boyle Heights.

I had to run some errands in Boyle Heights the other day. Although it could get sketchy driving through this part of East L.A., it's worth it just to see all the incredible hand-painted signage painted all over many of the local businesses. I wonder if it's the owners of the businesses that paint them. Or is there a local crew. Or even just one person who's the known "go to" guy...
As a graphic designer, I think I'm obligated to love a clean and precisely designed typeface. But there is a timeless and naive quality to hand-painted letters that will always hold it's own. And since I'm on the topic of painted type, I have to give a shout out to the work of the late great Margaret Kilgallen.
